The International Baccalaureate (IB) is pleased to announce that Portuguese will be offered as part of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) on-screen examinations and teaching programme.
From September 2023 Portuguese will be added to Language Acquisition and Language and Literature subjects as part of their teaching programme and will be available also for assessment in the May 2025 session.
The addition of the language, spoken by 200 million people across the world, helps the IB move one step further in its mission to be internationally minded and to help promote international understanding and respect. As the official language in Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Portugal, Guinea-Bissau, Timor-Leste, Equatorial Guinea, Macau, Cabo Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe, Portuguese is mandatory in the national curriculums.
“We have been an eAssessment school since the pilot study ran in the May 2015 exam session. The addition of the Portuguese language to the suite of exams will hugely benefit our student population, raising the profile of the language in our school community as well as helping our students meet the national requirements,” said Simon Downing, MYP Coordinator at Saint Dominic International School in Portugal.
By adding Portuguese to the MYP eAssessment, students can take pride in their linguistic heritage and literary icons. It also further aligns the MYP to the Diploma Programme (DP) and Career-related Programme (CP), opening a clear pathway for MYP students studying Portuguese to further their studies at the DP or CP level. This development will expand the options for students to access universities across the continent and create future job prospects for students to teach the language across the globe.

Therefore, the addition of the Portuguese Language to the eAssessment will allow them to become masters of the language and be the vehicles of change in Mozambique and beyond,” noted Esther Nondi, MYP Coordinator at Aga Khan Academy Maputo in Mozambique.
As part of IB’s commitment to strengthen access to an IB education for all students of all backgrounds and due to the increasing demand of MYP eAssessment, the IB will continue to make the assessment available in more languages, to meet the needs of our school communities.
