The International Baccalaureate (IB), in collaboration with the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), are delighted to celebrate a landmark achievement with the announcement of 200 IB Programmes implemented in Candidate and IB World Schools across the country.
Since the first IB World School in 1979, the IB has collaborated with MEXT in supporting the growth and expansion of IB programmes in the country. In 2013, IB and MEXT entered a formal partnership to offer a select group of DP subjects and the DP Core—extended essay (EE), theory of knowledge (TOK) and creativity, activity and service (CAS)—in Japanese, so high school students can undertake these subjects in the country’s national language.
Haif Bannayan, Global Director of Business Development at the IB, noted, “It is both an honour and a privilege to collaborate with the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in our commitment to promote IB education across the country. We are delighted that the IB programmes are implemented in article one and in international schools in almost equal numbers today. We look forward to our continued partnership with MEXT to expand access to IB programmes so more young people can benefit from the country’s highly sophisticated national curriculum alongside high-quality IB programmes."
The DP is an assessed programme for students aged 16 to 19. It is respected by leading universities across the globe and considered a world-class preparation for university. The DP helps students to flourish intellectually, and develops and nurtures broader skills and values, producing curious, confident, motivated and multilingual young people. Students join a cohort of creative problem-solvers and critical thinkers, nurtured with a rich depth and breadth of knowledge that will serve them throughout their life. DP curriculum is made up of six subject groups, and the DP core elements include theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the extended essay (EE).
